What are UNCLE and USS_UNCLE ?
UNCLE is a scalable parallel incompressible flow simulation code that solves the Unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (UnRANS) equations for complex geometries represented by multiblock structured grids with arbitrary block connectivity. It is being developed by the Computational Simulation and Design Center (SimCenter) at the ERC, An Institute for Computational Science and Engineering at Mississippi State University (MSU). UNCLE is a research code that has evolved over the past few years under support from the Office of Naval Research, and is continuously being extended and improved. UNCLE has been applied to a number of flows of Navy interest, including submarine, propulsor and surface ship flows.
USS_UNCLE is a graphical
user interface for using the UNCLE flow
simulation code. It includes various tools that simplify the use of
UNCLE for analysis and design of
Navy hydrodynamics applications. USS_UNCLE currently
includes GUMBO (Graphical Unstructured
MultiBlock
Omnitool) for graphical preprocessing
of grid and boundary condition information needed by the flow solver, as well
as a graphical capability to define input files for case running, and online
documentation.
NOTE: UNCLE, and USS_UNCLE are works in progress and will be continuously enhanced over time.
What is the Availablitity of USS_UNCLE and UNCLE ?
The primary users of USS_UNCLE and UNCLE are the SimCenter, the US Navy, and other users designated by the Navy (ONR Contact: Dr. L. Patrick Purtell). This is also the primary purpose of the USS_UNCLE user interface. Mississippi State University retains the intellectual property rights to UNCLE, USS_UNCLE, and GUMBO, but does not market these codes. All versions of UNCLE, USS_UNCLE, and GUMBO are copyrighted by Mississippi State University.
Although UNCLE is generally used in support of specific Navy contracts, the SimCenter occasionally supports US industry directly, through individually arranged sponsored collaborations. Typically, the SimCenter supports client US companies in their analysis and design studies, using UNCLE for CFD analysis. Such arrangements are always subject to US critical technologies export controls, restrictions arising from government contracts, and are not undertaken without concurrence of the governmental agencies who have sponsored the enabling research.
